5 ways to stay healthy when you work at a desk

We all know how hard it is to start a healthy lifestyle. It isn’t easy to go through your cabinets and throw out all the junk food and ice cream. The only nice part is after this is done, it is easier when a craving kicks in when all you have at home is healthy food. The office is a totally different atmosphere though. It is easy to fall off track when you smell the pizza coming from the break room and come home tired after a long day of staring at a computer, so you skip your workout. Here are 5 easy ways to stay on track even when you’re stuck at on office desk.

1. Eat Breakfast

Breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day it is a great way to start your day off healthy. If you eat a fully nutritious breakfast this should help keep you full till around lunchtime. Which will help keep you away from the donuts in the break room or grabbing something unhealthy out of the vending machine. It is hard to get your regain a healthy diet especially when you get off track early in the morning.

2. Take A Lunch Break

This goes hand and hand with eating breakfast. It is easy to get caught up at your desk with a project and skip lunch. This will not only lead to you raiding the vending machine for something to keep your body running, it will also lead to lower energy in the second half of your day. Taking a lunch break helps give us a chance to refuel or body. With the right nutrients, it also helps give our minds a little break which will help you be more productive throughout your day.

3. Stand Up When Possible.

Most of us these days spend most of our days in the office sitting down in front of a computer. This can lead to body tightness and muscular imbalances. Standing up for a little will also help get the blood in your body pumping a little harder and help reinvigorate your body. Studies have also shown sitting all day is really unhealthy for our bodies and standing for a couple hours a day can help lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and lower your risk of heart disease. Now of course you do not have to do the 2 hours all at once, but every hour try to stand for 15 minutes. Trust me it will feel great to let your body stretch out a little. If you are worried about standing at work trust me no one is really paying attention and most people won’t even notice.

4. Maintain good posture

Another important aspect to keep in mind is when you are sitting to try to maintain good posture. It is easy when you’re sitting at a desk to start to hunch over and slide down into your seat. This can easily lead to you developing neck and back problems. I would recommend investing in a nice ergonomic desk chair. You might drop some more money then you would like to on a desk chair but it will be cheaper then back surgery.

5. Go For a Walk

This might be one of the most important things to remember. Getting up from your desk and taking a little walk will help get blood circulating properly again. This does not have to be anything extravagant just take a little walk to the water cooler or just a little lap around the office. A 3-5 minute walk will not only be beneficial to your physical health but to your mental health as well. Taking a little breather from your work and letting yourself decompress will be great for you in all aspects.
